Geeta's journey: From uncertainty to Licensed Nursing Professional
By Natash Aston Cutinha
Meet Geeta, a shining example of resilience and transformation. Geeta hails from the Gerasia community, where rag picking was the norm for daily survival. In the early 2000s, Coorg Organisation for Rural Development (CORD) began focusing on supporting children's education and organizing workshops for children from marginalized communities. It was during one of these workshops that children from the Gerasia community, including Geeta, attended and caught the attention of CORD.

Geeta's life was marked by tragedy early on. She lost her mother at a young age and was raised by community members. Her father, stricken with depression after his wife's death, abandoned the family. Despite these hardships, Geeta was determined to continue her education. Along with four other children, she approached CORD with a plea to help them escape the cycle of rag picking and pursue their studies.

Understanding the urgency and potential in these children, CORD sought and obtained permission from the community leader to enroll them in a boarding school. Geeta and her peers were admitted to CSI Girls Boarding Home in Chikkamagalur. There, Geeta completed her education up to the 12th grade. Recognizing her potential and ambition, CORD facilitated her enrollment in a general nursing course at Holdsworth Memorial Hospital in Mysore. After two and a half years of rigorous training, Geeta graduated and served at the same hospital for two years.

Today, Geeta is a staff nurse at Fr. Muller's Hospital in Mangalore, where she has been working for four years. Her journey from uncertainty to a registered nurse is a testament to her indomitable spirit and the impactful support of CORD.

Geeta's story is a powerful reminder of the transformative power of education and support. CORD remains committed to helping children from marginalized communities break free from the chains of poverty and build a brighter future.
