Janaki and Kavya: From Struggle to Aspiration
By Natash Aston Cutinha
Meet Janaki and Kavya, two resilient sisters from the remote village of Kumbara Gadige in Somwarpete Taluk, Kodagu District. This hilly region, characterized by heavy rainfall and a lack of transportation, posed significant challenges for the sisters. They had to walk 4-5 kilometers or rely on private vehicles to reach any destination.
Their journey to a better life began when Saraswati, a tribal lady working in our fields, brought them to Coorg Organisation for Rural Development (CORD). The sisters had lost their mother, and their father was chronically ill and unable to work. Their elder brother, who had been the primary caretaker, had passed away, leaving another brother to do daily labor. However, he could not sufficiently support Janaki and Kavya, who were struggling to secure even a single meal each day.
Recognizing their dire situation, Saraswati brought Janaki and Kavya to CORD. We welcomed them into our family, providing the care and support they desperately needed. When they arrived, Janaki was in the 6th grade and Kavya in the 4th grade. We placed them in the CSI Girls Boarding Home to ensure they received a proper education.
Today, Janaki has completed her 12th grade and is now in her first year of General Nursing at Lombard Memorial Hospital in Udupi. Kavya is currently in the 12th grade at Mulki Junior College and aspires to pursue nursing after completing her studies.
Janaki and Kavya's journey from struggle to aspiration is a testament to the transformative power of education and the unwavering support of CORD. Their story highlights our commitment to helping children from marginalized communities build brighter futures.
