Nikhil’s Journey from Isolation to Education
By Natash Aston Cutinha
Meet Nikhil, a young boy from the remote village of Kirumakki near Virajpete in Kodagu. Life has not been easy for Nikhil and his family. His father is absent, and his mother, who suffers from a heart condition, lives with him in his grandparents' house. His uncle, his mother's brother, does his best to take care of them, but the family struggles with financial constraints.
Nikhil's remote location and the family's inability to afford transportation meant that he could not attend school. The nearest school was 7-8 kilometers away, and there were no public or private transport options available. As a result, Nikhil remained at home, missing out on the education he deserved.
During a field visit, Coorg Organisation for Rural Development (CORD) staff discovered Nikhil's situation. They provided counseling to the family and took responsibility for Nikhil's education. CORD arranged for his transportation and provided additional support to the family. When Nikhil joined the 1st grade, he was already 8 years old.
Today, Nikhil is in the 3rd grade, and CORD continues to support his education. His story is a testament to the transformative impact of timely intervention and sustained support.
