A Step Towards Justice for Displaced Families.

On March 14, 2025, a significant step was taken in Kanthur, Nagarahole, as the forest land of 27 families was surveyed to recognize their individual rights under the Forest Rights Act. This initiative aims to restore land ownership to those who have been historically displaced.

The Karnataka High Court had earlier appointed a committee led by Prof. Muzafar Azadi, Mrs. Jaji Karumbaiaha, and D.F.O. Srinivas, which submitted a report highlighting the plight of 3,418 families who were forcibly evacuated from Nagarahole forest without compensation or rehabilitation. These families, originally residing in Bhramagiripura Hadi, had been earning their livelihood as wage laborers in nearby coffee plantations.

As part of the ongoing survey, land ownership for 27 families has now been documented. The remaining 47 families will have their land surveyed starting March 5, 2025, ensuring that more displaced families can reclaim their rightful land.

This effort marks a crucial step in addressing historical injustices and empowering displaced communities with legal land rights. Stay tuned for further updates on this important initiative.
